Emmylou Harris will release Spyboy on November 7, 2025 via New West Records. The 19-track live album was produced by Buddy Miller and Emmylou Harris and features Miller on guitar and vocals, Brady Blade on drums, percussion, and vocals, and Daryl Johnson on bass, djembe, percussion, and vocals as well. Originally issued on compact disc by Eminent Records in 1998, the 2025 edition of Spyboy features 5 previously unreleased recordings of the band performing Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' “A Thing About You,” Bob Dylan’s “Every Grain of Sand,” Bill Monroe’s “Get Up John,” Lucinda Williams’ “Sweet Old World,” as well as the Harris and Kate & Anna McGarrigle co-write “All I Left Behind.” It also features updated artwork as well as new and updated liner notes written by Harris and Miller. A limited pressing of Spyboy was made available in celebration of Record Store Day in May and quickly sold out.

How a forgotten Nash Ramblers recording became a pleasant surprise for Emmylou Harris fans - azcentral article.

Emmylou Harris sees her latest album as "one of those pleasant little surprises from the universe" — a live recording of her first performance on a Nashville stage with the acoustic bluegrass supergroup she'd just assembled, the Nash Ramblers.

"We didn't know it existed," she says of the recording, captured at a 1990 concert at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and released three decades later as "Ramble in Music City: The Lost Concert."

Those tapes were initially shelved in favor of a subsequent performance at the Ryman Auditorium the following spring, which was released to great acclaim in 1992 as "At the Ryman" by Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers.

"At the Ryman" won a Grammy — Best Country Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal — and played a key role in preserving the beloved music hall.

And the recording of that earlier performance?

"We'd all just forgotten," Harris says, speaking by phone from her home in Nashville in advance of her concert at Mesa Arts Center on Thursday, Oct. 7.

'Ramble in Music City' wasn't meant to be a live release

The recording presented on "Ramble in Music City" was intended to capture a moment in time as the Nash Ramblers took the stage in Nashville after several months of touring — purely for archival reasons.

"At the Ryman," on the other hand, was always meant to be a live release.

"I worked up a bunch of songs and we recorded them for the first time live at the Ryman, which was getting ready to be torn down," Harris says.

"It was a really good place to play songs for the first time and record them in front of a limited audience. I think we had 200 people. So that was our focus. And that went on to do very well."

It's the same approach the Americana icon had taken to an earlier live album, 1982's "Last Date."

"I have this theory that the first time you actually play a song in front of an audience live, there's something about the energy that you never get back," she says.

"It doesn't mean it's the best version. It might get more powerful later. But there's a very special quality to that first time you play a song, when it's still becoming part of you. And I wanted to capture that experience. So that was the whole point of 'At the Ryman.'"

Why Harris formed the Nash Ramblers

She'd formed the Nash Ramblers, in part, to give her voice a break after having to belt it out over the Hot Band in 15 years of heavy touring.

"This was before ear monitors," she says. "And I suppose I felt I was pushing my voice a little bit."

Beyond that, she's a firm believer in the theory that a slight change in approach can have a huge artistic impact.

Harris was sharing those thoughts with a friend, John Starling of the bluegrass group the Seldom Scene, when he suggested a way out.

"I had been whining and complaining to him about 'I don't know what to do next; I'm kind of tired,'" Harris says.

"I had a great band then. But sometimes you need something to just kind of get your juices flowing. And he said, 'Listen, Sam Bush is leaving New Grass Revival. Hire Sam and put a bluegrass band together.' So that's what I did."

In addition to Bush (on fiddle, mandolin and vocals), the Nash Ramblers included Roy Huskey Jr. (bass), Larry Atamanuik (drums), Al Perkins (dobro, banjo, vocals), and Jon Randall Stewart (acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals).

Harris was comfortable performing bluegrass music

Bluegrass was a natural extension of what Harris had been doing all along.

"Even in the Hot Band, I had Ricky Skaggs in the band for a while," she says, pointing out that she'd already done a bluegrass album, "Roses in the Snow," in 1980.

"That material had seeped into the Hot Band. We loved bluegrass. That's the stuff we'd sing when we were warming up before a show or on the bus. We'd find a Bill Monroe song, an old gospel song. And I had started as a folk singer, so it was kind of always there."

The 1990 concert was an undiscovered gem

Music archaeologist James Austin unearthed the 1990 Tennessee Performing Arts Center concert, which led to their release on Nonesuch Records.

"He found this amazing concert in its entirety," Harris says.

"And just listening to the recording, we didn't fix anything. We didn't fix a vocal. We didn't fix an instrumental. We had to take out some of the songs, but just for the length. Not because they weren't good enough to go on the record."

What remains is a stunning 23-song document of that historic night, including such obvious highlights as the country hit "If I Could Only Win Your Love," an aching performance of the country standard "Sweet Dreams" and the title track to "Roses in the Snow."

It's essentially the songs she had been doing up to that point with the more electric Hot Band. In bringing the volume down, the arrangements on "Ramble in Music City" are able to focus more on the close country harmonies.

"It's wonderful to just shine a light on these amazing musicians," Harris says. "I mean, all of my bands have been great. But this was my foray into basically a bluegrass band but with a drummer."

Hearing those recordings for the first time in three decades, Harris says, "I remembered that this was such a great band. And also, you think, boy, I don't know if I can hit those high notes anymore. But I'm glad we got 'em on tape when I had 'em."

It's been six years since her latest album of new music, an inspired collaboration with longtime musical partner Rodney Crowell, "The Traveling Kind." And she has no "particular plans" at the moment to get back in the studio and record new material.

She's been working on a memoir while keeping busy with charity work.

"I'm very involved in a working dog rescue in my backyard," Harris says.

"I do a lot of fundraising for that and for this other enterprise called Crossroads Campus that works with disadvantaged youth and also homeless animals. I'm involved with a thing for the Women's Refugee Committee. We do benefits for that."

Writing a memoir has been a bittersweet experience

The memoir has been in the works for "way too long," she says.

"I haven't gotten very far," she says. "I'm obsessive about rewriting every paragraph. But you know, it's a project. And right now, I've gotten very busy. But I'm hoping to get back to it in the late winter and next year."

It's been a bittersweet experience, this memoir.

"I've reconnected with a lot of my friends from the past," she says.

"Some of them were actually dealing with cancer and passed away. But I was able to reconnect and enjoy their company on the phone and talk about how important they were on my particular journey. So it's quite illuminating, but it isn't easy."

It has, however, caused her to reflect on all the good things that have happened in her life along the way.

"I've been an extraordinarily lucky person in my life with all the people that have surrounded me and supported me," she says. "And I guess in a sense, I want this book to be just a big thank you note."

Getting back to the music, though, she isn't ruling out another album altogether.

"Who knows, at some point, if I really feel like I've got some songs and I think, 'Man, I've just got to go in the studio and record them....," Harris says, trailing off.

But she already has so much material she loves.

"For the most part, everything I've recorded over the years still resonates for me," she says. "And it's hard enough to fit as many songs as I would like into the sets. You get all that new stuff in there and you have to play it."

In the meantime, people itching for new music to explore can go listen to "Ramble in Music City," an album Harris says she's "just delighted" to release.

"I'm glad that people have a chance to revisit this fantastic band," she says. "It's a little gift from the universe."

Just after I started high school, there was the Cuban missile crisis, so I wasn’t sure if the world was going to be around much longer. It was a very intense, frightening 13 days, then suddenly it was over and I got into the more mundane problems of being a teenager. I wanted to act, was in plays at school and would read the plays of Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee. The weirder the better. I didn’t have an outlet for music then. I’d hated piano lessons. I listened to the usual teenage fare like Frankie Avalon or Bobby Rydell, but the folk music explosion changed everything. My older brother owned a record player and would play old-time country and bluegrass. Nothing did anything for me except Johnny Cash’s first record, Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar! Then suddenly there was Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie. I cherished Dick Cerri’s radio show Music Americana, the Folk Music of America. Every night, he’d play the new folk artists I was just becoming aware of and I would sit on my little bedroom floor doing my homework, listening in awe.

Country Music Hall of Famer Emmylou Harris has released dozens of albums in her five-decades-long career. She’s collaborated with Gram Parsons, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson and has won 14 Grammys.

Here, in her Letter to My Younger Self, she says she’s grateful to Parsons for giving her her voice – but the most perfect day she’s ever experienced was the day her second daughter was born.

I had just gotten into folk music when I was 16. I got a guitar and I was learning everything I could, which basically ended up being three chords. There was a radio station in Washington DC, about 25 miles away, which played folk music every night. It opened up a whole world for me, all those songs and incredible singers and songwriters. So I had my radio on every night while I was doing my homework, just discovering all these artists like Joan Baez, who was really the one who made me pick up a guitar. Besides her music, I feel she changed the heart of America through her involvement in the civil rights movement, using her voice, literally using her voice, the way she did. I’d love to tell that teenage girl listening to the radio that one day she’ll be on stage singing for Joan Baez at her induction into the Kennedy Center Honors [in June 2021].

Looking back on the 16-year-old me, I feel a certain tenderness towards that young girl. I didn’t know much, I was very naive. I had a very sheltered life. I was very intense. I would say to that girl, try to have more fun. I worried about getting good grades. I didn’t really know how to flirt. I didn’t date. I didn’t really know how to fit into the social fabric of high school. And I didn’t see how I could have a career in music because I didn’t study music – I didn’t know music theory. So I thought music would just be something I would do on the side.

I was 21 when I moved to New York City. That’s pretty young, I guess. I didn’t know anyone except the wonderful singer-songwriter Paul Siebel, who introduced me to David Bromberg and Jerry Jeff Walker and all the people who were making music in the [Greenwich] Village. It was a very creative time. I started making music with friends, trying to get little gigs, learning my craft. I was very inspired by the people I heard play, like Joni Mitchell and Townes Van Zandt – I was quite astounded the first time I saw him. I never imagined I would end up recording [Van Zandt’s] Pancho and Lefty, which became a real central part of my repertoire.

I had the most extraordinarily loving parents. We were a very close family and I had a wonderful upbringing in Virginia. Then one day I just kind of said to them, right, I’m out of here, I’m going to New York. And, looking back now, as a parent, I just really can’t believe I put them through that. But they knew I had to follow my own course. They couldn’t have been more supportive, because when I got up there I ended up getting married [to songwriter Tom Slocum] and having my first daughter [at 22] and then my marriage broke up a year later. I went back home with my daughter and it was always a safe haven. It was like, everything’s okay, you have a home as long as you want it. There was never any judgment or anything like that.

I think my parents were probably convinced they could stop worrying about me when my first record [1969’s Gliding Bird] came out. All of a sudden your daughter’s got her picture on an album cover! They were proud and I think they were also relieved. I actually dedicated that record to them. Over time they got to know all my band members; when we played in the area we would always go to visit them. And we would have a little football game in the front yard and they would have a barbecue for everyone. My parents became part of the whole deal.

I really believe no one would have paid me any attention if it wasn’t for Gram [Parsons, with whom she made the seminal albums GP and Grievous Angel]. When I met him I had not found my own voice. I was an imitator; you have to start that way. But I really do believe that it was Gram who gave me… not just my voice, but he taught me about understanding music and feeling music, the way it came through me. Of course, I certainly had something to build on, but he was that last rocket boost and, after that, everything kind of fell into place.

I’d like to tell my younger self that though it will be very difficult when Gram dies [in 1973, aged 26], it will be okay again, eventually. That was a very hard time because I really felt I had found where I was supposed to be. Even though I probably assumed that at some point I would make a record on my own, that was something I wasn’t even thinking about. I just was thinking about what we would do together. Musically, I mean. Then suddenly I’d lost a friend and a teacher, someone I felt I still had so much to learn from. It was devastating. But I had wonderful support from my family and my musical friends, and they helped me take one step at a time. I was nourished and I gathered strength and was able to move forward.

If I could go back to my younger self, especially in the most difficult times, I would just say, don’t worry. Just do what you feel in your heart and everything will be all right. Because it always did turn out okay. There was a time when I went into deep debt over a project, The Ballad of Sally Rose [the 1985 concept album based loosely on her relationship with Parsons, previously described by Harris as “a commercial disaster”]. But I don’t have any regrets about doing it at all because it was real creative reclaiming. After that I had to work my way back up but then, all of a sudden, I did this record called Trio with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton [a multi-million seller in 1987 and her biggest success]. So the creative chances always seemed to come along. Certainly, there were times when it seemed like I was treading water. But I didn’t really have any other talents – the only thing I knew how to do was sing so, in a sense, I had no choice.

If I could spend time with anyone just one more time it would be my father. He died very suddenly and I was not there. My mother ended up coming to live with me, and she lived with me for 21 years. My parents were so close, they were almost like one entity. So, in the 21 years that my mother lived with me, we became the greatest friends. Of course, we’d always loved each other, but now we travelled together, we did many things together and I got to know her as a person. But, with my father, I never got that chance. Even though he was an extraordinary influence on me. He was my hero. He was a war hero [Marine Corps officer Walter Harris spent 10 months as a prisoner-of-war during the Korean war], but he was also my hero as a father, as a husband, as a brother, as a neighbour. He knew I loved him, but there were conversations that I wish we could have had. I wish I’d spent more time with him, maybe under the hood of a car – he was a great mechanic. He was also a wonderful gardener. They’re the gifts he had, that I wish I could have shared with him more. I wish I could tell him how much he meant to me, even though I think he knew.

If I could live one day again it would be when my second daughter was born. With my first one, I didn’t really know much about babies or being a mother. And I suppose my life was still a little rocky at that point. But with my second daughter, my husband [producer Brian Ahern] and I had a great relationship. We both already had daughters from other marriages and having a child together was a combination of our love and respect and regard for each other, and the life we were going to have, becoming a family with the other daughters. Yes, at that point, the world was in a perfect place and all the planets were aligned.

Named for one of Emmylou’s own dogs, Bonaparte traveled on the road with Emmylou for ten years and was her constant companion. When he died suddenly in 2002, Emmylou was heartbroken. But her personal loss became the genesis of something remarkable when she founded Bonaparte’s Retreat to honor the memory of her beloved companion.

The first private animal rescue group to partner with Metro Nashville Animal Care & Control, Bonaparte’s Retreat continues to focus on the shelter dogs often overlooked or deemed unadoptable. To date, Bonaparte’s Retreat has saved over 400 dogs and adopted them into permanent and loving homes.

We host “meet and greet” adoption events throughout the year, which are advertised on our website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter). And we participate in community-wide special adoption events. Emmylou Harris made her Nonesuch Records debut with the release of her album Red Dirt Girl twenty years ago, on September 5, 2000. To mark its twentieth anniversary, Nonesuch will release the album—which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album—on limited-edition, translucent red vinyl on February 19, 2021, available to pre-order now in the Nonesuch Store . The initial vinyl edition of the album, released on standard black vinyl in 2016, is no longer in print.

Harris—whom the Los Angeles Times dubbed "the most captivating female artist ever in country music"—wrote all but one of the twelve tracks on Red Dirt Girl, marking only the second time in her career that she had been so involved in the composition of an album. “In songs about lonely journeys and lost companions," said the New York Times, "Ms. Harris has found herself.”

Red Dirt Girl was produced by Malcolm Burn, who had worked with Harris engineering and mixing her previous solo studio recording, 1995's Wrecking Ball, and features Burn on piano, guitar, and bass; Buddy Miller on lead guitar; Daryl Johnson on bass and drums; and Ethan Johns on drums, guitar, and other miscellaneous instruments. Dave Matthews sings a duet with Harris on the album, and Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, and Patty Griffin also contribute vocals.

Commenting on her new label and record back in 2000, Harris said: "I take pride in my new association with Nonesuch, a label for whom I have great admiration. Red Dirt Girl is a very meaningful record for me. I’ve only written this much for an album once before—The Ballad of Sally Rose—and I’m very pleased as well with what we have accomplished in the studio."

Nonesuch Records President David Bither, then Senior Vice President, said at the time: "We have had the privilege over many years to work with some of the most creative and influential artists and producers in music. This launches a new area of musical exploration for Nonesuch, and we are thrilled that Emmylou is the artist to open this door for us. It is an honor to work with an artist who has such a formidable body of work behind her, but who is now creating possibly the best music of her career."

Harris has since released three additional solo studio albums on Nonesuch, Stumble into Grace (2003), All I Intended to Be (2008), Hard Bargain (2011); reissues of Wrecking Ball (2014) and her 1992 album with the Nash Ramblers, At the Ryman (2017); two duo albums with Rodney Crowell , the Grammy-winning Old Yellow Moon (2013) and The Traveling Kind (2015); two releases in 2006 with Marc Knopfler, All the Roadrunning and Real Live Roadrunning ; and vinyl box sets of her early albums, in 2017 and 2019.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (July 23, 2020) Award-winning songwriter and multi-Grammy winner Rodney Crowell, Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill, and Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame member and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Emmylou Harris will step into the circle together for the Grand Ole Opry’s 4,935th consecutive Saturday night broadcast Saturday, August 1. Between the three of them, the music legends have amassed 36 Grammy _® Awards and 109 nominations. The Opry will air on Circle TV , wsmonline.com , and SiriusXM.

Best friends. Collaborators. Songwriters. Bandmates. Touring Partners.

"I met [Emmylou] and Rodney when I was 19,” Gill has said. “I don't have two better friends in the world.”

The rich history and friendship between Crowell, Gill and Harris runs deep and for almost 50 years. The three music legends have careers that have connected, intertwined and supported each other, and most of all lasted. Their connection to and projects with each other have put them in circles of some of the most renowned musicians, songwriters and artists in music. Gill has said of Harris, “She’s the one in the middle that we all connect through."

Harris recorded Crowell’s “Bluebird Wine” on her Pieces of the Sky album and later invited Crowell to be in her Hot Band during the 1970s. Crowell left the band in 1977 to embark on his own solo career, putting his own band, the Cherry Bombs, together. He continues to this day to work and collaborate with Harris. Gill had been playing with Pure Prairie League and left to be part of Crowell’s the Cherry Bombs. In the mid-80s, Gill joined Harris’ backing band for three albums – The Ballad of Sally Rose, Thirteen and Angel Band, with Thirteen being a project that Crowell also worked on with them. At the end of the 1980s, each began to gain more traction with their own solo careers but they remained the best of friends and continued to support each other and collaborate together on projects.

“It’s still my favorite gig, is playing with Rodney,” Gill told No Depression last year. Gill added, “I can’t even fathom what my life would be like if I hadn’t met Emmy.”

“Emmy and Vince? Hmm...With those voices, maybe I’ll have a chance if we’re wearing masks,” mused Crowell.

“There’s nothing better than singing with old and dear friends, especially if those friends happen to be Rodney and Vince,” said Harris.

As the Grand Ole Opry approaches its 95 ^th year in the midst of a global pandemic, Opry members and special guest artists have kept the music playing from the unbroken circle and is reaching some of its largest audiences to date. The Opry has been reaching millions of fans and making new ones each week as it has logged viewers from over 100 countries worldwide who have been tuning in just since the live audience shows were paused in mid-March.

Though Opry shows with a live Opry House audience are paused, the show will be broadcast live on Circle and Gray TV stations, DISH Studio Channel 102, Sling TV and other TV affiliates. Our Germantown home suffered extensive damage to the windows, roof, kennels, HVAC units, ceilings and walls. It will take some time to have power restored and to complete repairs in order to reopen.

We were lucky. All of the young people in our affordable housing program are safe and being temporarily being housed at a hotel. All of our adoptable animals are safe and staying in foster homes.

We were lucky. But we need your help.

Robertson wouldn't be the only songwriter returning to the "Last Waltz," either. Emmylou Harris joined the festivities to perform "Evangeline," a country track she cut with The Band from a live sound stage in the mid-1970s. The number would later be added in Scorsese's 1978 film.

"As Minnie Pearl would say, 'I'm glad to be here,'" Harris said. "I'm glad to still be here. Especially tonight."

Earlier in the night, Harris joined Michael McDonald, newly reunited Doobie Brothers vocalist and keyboardist, for a cover of "Helpless."

Emmylou Harris's "The Studio Albums, 1980–83" Vinyl Box Set Now in Nonesuch Store

When Record Store Day took place earlier this month, included among the special releases on that day was Emmylou Harris's The Studio Albums, 1980–83, a new vinyl collection featuring classic titles. A limited number of the set is now available in the Nonesuch Store.

This set of studio releases includes five albums on black vinyl—Roses in the Snow, Evangeline, Cimarron, Last Date, and White Shoes—as well as a bonus 45 RPM single of "That Lovin' Feeling Again” with Roy Orbison b/w "Mr. Sandman." The collection will receive a limited release of 1,100.

This year's collection follows the 2017 Record Store Day release of Queen of the Silver Dollar: The Studio Albums, 1975–79, which has since sold out.

Emmylou Harris will be the first act to play at City Winery Philadelphia. That’s the Center City outpost of the music venue restaurant chain that’s part of Fashion District Philadelphia.

Harris and her band the Red Dirt Boys will be on stage in the Winery’s 350-seat concert space on Friday, Sept. 27, kicking off a four-night opening run in which she will be followed by the Mountain Goats, Josh Ritter, and Justin Townes Earle.

Emmylou Harris' underappreciated 'Sally Rose' gets second life 33 years later

It was supposed to be her masterpiece.

But “The Ballad of Sally Rose,” Emmylou Harris’ 1985 country concept album and her first major label release composed entirely of songs she’d written, was, as she'd later describe it, a commercial disaster.

Despite positive reviews, sales were middling compared to her previous releases, and the tour, which featured a full band with backing singers to replicate the songs on stage as close to the studio versions as possible, cost her thousands of dollars.

Thirty-three years after its release, the underappreciated album has been given a second life and rereleased with 10 previously unheard demo recordings.

‘Sally was born in the black hills of Dakota’

About 40 years ago, Harris and her Hot Band had a day off in Rapid City, South Dakota. Tour manager and “road mangler” Phil Kaufman asked their hotel clerk where to hear music. She listed a few places, then named a bar they shouldn’t go to under any circumstances.

“We headed right for that bar,” Kaufman man.

There, a woman who’d had a few too many was certain these newcomers were celebrities, and she staggered over to the group. “She looked at Emmylou and said, ‘I know you. Who are you?’ " Kaufman said. “That’s when I chimed in, ‘Why, that’s Sally Rose. Sally Rose and the Buds.’ She said, ‘Oh, I have all your records.’ Then she kind of stumbled away.”

Sally Rose became an inside joke for the band and an alias used for hotel check-ins, replacing Kaufman and Harris’ prior pseudonyms, “Phil Fruitjar and Ann B. Gayo,” a sly nod to Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya.” But then it became something more.

“I was taken by the name Sally Rose,” Harris said. “She became sort of my avatar.”

For years, Harris had saved up ideas for songs inspired by the time she spent with musical partner and mentor Gram Parsons, whom she met in a Washington, D.C., club in late 1971. Parsons introduced her to country music, and she toured and recorded with him for fewer than two years before his death in 1973. “My whole career and life emanated from that brief period of time,” she explained.

‘A bit of a dud’

At this point in her career, Harris, one of music's greatest song interpreters, had released 11 albums produced by then-husband Brian Ahern. Only three of her original songs ended up on those albums, but one listen to the devastating “Boulder to Birmingham,” from 1975’s “Pieces of the Sky,” proves that her pen was as much of an asset as her impeccable soprano.

After being moved by “deep emotional quality” of the songs on Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 tour de force “Nebraska,” Harris, a self-described "terrible procrastinator," knew it was time to tell Sally’s story.

She enlisted the help of British songwriter Paul Kennerley. They’d met in the late 1970s when Harris sang on “The Legend of Jesse James,” a concept album Kennerley wrote. Not long after, she took her version of Kennerley's “Born to Run,” a song that had been cut from the project, to No. 3 on the country charts.

“The idea I could actually have somebody who had done a similar idea help shepherd me through this and make it a reality, that was the final thing that made me say, “OK, I’ve got to do it,’ " Harris said. “It’s either going to be something or it’s not, but I have to actually do the work.”

“Had Emmylou been unknown and just starting out, she would have just written this stuff, because she knew what she wanted to say,” Kennerley said. “But by that point in her career, I think she was aware of the attention there would be. … I think it would be more comfortable to have someone else around when she courageously dove into this new pond.”

When they started working together, Harris, separated from Ahern, still lived in L.A. and Kennerley’s move from London to the States was a few months away, he remembered. They met halfway, in Nashville, and began fleshing out the project.

By the time they were done, both were Music City residents, and they had 13 songs that told the story of Sally Rose, a woman “raised with a proud but a wandering heart” in South Dakota. One night her life is forever changed when she meets The Singer. While playing rhythm guitar and singing in his band, she falls in love with him.

Kennerley and Harris recorded demos at the UA Tower on Music Row, and when making the actual record, used a top-notch band that featured Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Gail Davies contributing backing vocals, and Waylon Jennings, Albert Lee and Hank DeVito on guitar.

“If you’ve got Emmylou Harris in a room with an astonishingly good group of musicians, all you have to do is press record. Believe me, that is all I should have done,” said the self-deprecating Kennerley, who still rues going over budget and using what he has deemed “a preponderance of snare drum.”

Released in 1985, “The Ballad of Sally Rose” credits Harris and Kennerley as co-producers (“I don’t know why he gave me credit. I was just there,” she said) and co-writers (“I was merely a midwife,” he said).

The record peaked at No. 8 on the Top Country Albums chart, earned Harris a Grammy nomination and received positive reviews: The Tennessean’s music reporter at the time, Robert K. Oermann, described it as “a masterpiece of romance and imagery.”

Commercially, it was “a bit of a dud,” Harris said. “Concept album,” she said with a smile, is music industry speak for “We don’t hear any singles.” Of the record’s three singles, only one, “White Line,” cracked the top 20.

Sales were lackluster, and the subsequent tour, during which Harris played a set of her hits followed by “The Ballad of Sally Rose” in its entirety, lost thousands. “At the end of the tour, I came back and realized I didn’t have enough money to buy a house,” she said.

Harris wouldn’t release an album that included more than one or two of her songs until 2000’s “Red Dirt Girl,” and Kennerley, convinced his production “overegged the pudding,” didn’t listen to “Sally Rose” for 30 years.

Trisha Yearwood recorded “Woman Walk the Line” (Harris sang harmony on it) for her stellar 1992 album “Hearts in Armor,” and Patty Loveless’ 2009 version of “Diamond in My Crown” is a stunner, but overall, it seemed as though the story of Sally Rose had fallen into obscurity.

Rediscovery and rerelease

Ten years ago, Kennerley discovered 10 demos of songs from “The Ballad of Sally Rose.” He sent them to James Austin, who’d spearheaded Harris’ box set “Songbird.” Austin sent the recordings to Harris, who hadn’t heard them in decades. “She called me and said, ‘Oh, I love these,’ " Austin recalled. “She said something to the effect of ‘This has to come out. We have to release it.’ "

“The Ballad of Sally Rose” was rereleased with the demos in June. If it wasn’t obvious upon its initial release, it is now: This record is a masterpiece.

Sparse and profoundly moving, like the Springsteen record that inspired them, the stripped-down demos highlight Harris’ achingly beautiful voice and impeccable writing on songs like “Sweetheart of the Rodeo,” as flawless a country song as any artist could ever hope to write.

“I never once regretted putting all that time and energy into doing that record,” Harris said. “You follow through with your artistic conventions, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But I’m here today, all those years later, and the album is being rereleased. I’m really proud of it.”

Laughing, she added, “And I own my house, so everything worked out really well.”

And what became of her alter ego?

Sometimes, Kaufman says, he’ll get a phone call and hear a familiar voice on the line: “Hi, Phil, it’s Sally.”

'Woofstock' benefit concert

On Sept. 16, Emmylou Harris will close out the 2018 Americana Music Festival and Conference with her "Woofstock" benefit concert at Ascend Amphitheater. She'll be joined by a number of friends, including John Hiatt, Jamey Johnson, Margo Price, The Lone Bellow, Elise Davis, Jerry Douglas and Tommy Emmanuel, Ida Mae, Ashley Monroe and John Paul White.

All proceeds from the event will go to Bonaparte's Retreat, a dog rescue Harris founded in her backyard, and Crossroads Campus, a Germantown-based nonprofit animal rescue that provides job training and affordable housing programs for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system.
